The Borovoe sanatorium uses various types of showers, where water jets of different pressure, temperature and spray pattern act on the body. This helps improve well‑being, relieve tension and normalise blood circulation. The choice of procedure is made by a doctor based on the patient's health condition.
Water is supplied through a wide nozzle with small holes and falls from above in many droplets, like warm rain. Pressure does not exceed one atmosphere, temperature — 34–37 °C. A session lasts 10–20 minutes. This procedure soothes the nervous system, makes falling asleep easier and reduces the effects of stress. It is recommended for neuroses, early‑stage hypertension and chronic fatigue. It is not used in acute inflammations or fever.
An intensified version of the rain shower. The shower head has very narrow openings from which thin jets resembling needle pricks emerge. Pressure — 1–1.5 atmospheres, temperature — 33–35 °C, duration — 5–10 minutes. The procedure activates capillary circulation, tones muscles and improves skin nutrition. It is useful for flabby skin, cellulite, low blood pressure and asthenia.
A contrast procedure: hot water (37–45 °C) and cold water (15–20 °C) are alternately directed onto the body at a pressure of 1.5–2.5 atmospheres. This temperature change trains blood vessels, accelerates metabolism and invigorates the nervous system. A session lasts 3–5 minutes, starting and ending with warm water. The course consists of 10–15 showers every other day. It is effective for obesity, hypotension, neuroses, and for hardening. Contraindications: stage II–III hypertension, pronounced atherosclerosis, tendency to vascular crises, acute inflammations.
Belongs to high‑pressure showers (from 1.5 to 3 atm.). The patient stands 2.5–3.5 metres from the shower unit and slowly turns. The jet is directed from bottom to top onto the legs, back, abdomen and sides: first a fan‑shaped jet, then a compact one. The manipulations are repeated. The procedure ends with a fan‑shaped jet. When indicated, the abdomen is massaged with a compact jet clockwise. The head, spine, chest and genital area are avoided. The water temperature at the start of the course is 35–32 °C, at the end — 20–15 °C. Duration is from 1 to 5 minutes, the course consists of 10–20 sessions.
A type of jet shower: the water is sprayed with a special paddle or fingers, the effect is milder than that of the Charcot shower. Temperature and pressure are similar.
Indications for jet showers: increasing muscle tone, reducing fat layer; osteochondrosis, osteoarthrosis (especially of large joints); neuroses, vegetative‑vascular dystonia, stage I–II hypertension, menopausal disorders, neurogenic impotence, insomnia, constipation, as well as prevention.
A medium‑pressure shower. Thin jets are directed successively to the paravertebral areas, shoulders, sides and legs. It stimulates skin receptors and tones the central nervous system. Over time, the body adapts and vegetative regulation improves. Indicated for vegetative‑vascular dystonia, early‑stage hypertension, overwork. People with a strong predominance of excitation or asthenia may find it uncomfortable, especially at low temperatures.
The water temperature starts at 36–34 °C and is gradually reduced to 25 °C. The course consists of 12–15 procedures of 2–5 minutes each, daily or every other day.
Horizontal hydrotherapy: the patient lies on a couch (or in a capsule), and above him there is a bar with many tiny holes from which thread‑like jets flow under pressure. This method is called filiform. The jets lightly prick the skin, causing local ionisation and oxygen saturation. Heat also acts. The Vichy shower relaxes and improves blood flow.
A rain shower is directed onto the perineal area. Cool and cold versions increase the tone of the pelvic floor muscles and tone erogenous zones; warm version improves blood supply to the pelvic area and accelerates the resolution of inflammation. A cold shower lasts 1–2 minutes, a warm one — 2–5 minutes. The course consists of 10–20 daily procedures.
Indications: erectile dysfunction, anal fissures, prostatitis, weakness of pelvic floor muscles with rectal prolapse, haemorrhoids, sexual neuroses, anal sphincter insufficiency, gynaecological diseases.
cold — below 20 °C
cool — 20–33 °C
indifferent — 34–36 °C
warm — 37–39 °C
hot — above 40 °C
variable temperature — 15–45 °C
